Healthy Mind

The support you need is just a click away

Niteline is a confidential and non judgemental listening, support and information helpline, run by students for students.

In addition to calling Niteline, confidential support is available via “Online listening” where any student can speak freely and confidentially through instant messaging. Working like Facebook chat or Skype instant messaging, you can visit Niteline Dublin between 9 p.m. and 2:30 a.m every night of term and talk confidentially to a Niteline volunteer.

Sometimes it can be easier to write it down than talk on the phone. Online listening is perfect for those who prefer not to have a phone conversation and allows those who may previously have felt anxious, afraid or awkward about speaking over the phone to receive the same confidential support Niteline provides via instant messaging.

Online listening adds an extra layer of anonymity which some callers may find comforting. No one can recognise your voice and you can’t be overheard. You can access the service privately anywhere, whether it’s on your Smartphone or on a campus computer.

Niteline is currently the only helpline in the country providing this service for students. Since its launch in October 2012 it has been highly successful in improving student support with calls through Online Listening rising 121.18% from 2012 to 2013.

On any given night of term all that stands between a student and confidential support is one click of the mouse.

Here is an idea of what you will see when you log on.

What happens when you contact Niteline?

Sometimes a supportive voice on the other end of the line can give you that little bit of strength to keep going. We want to make sure that every student knows that we are here for them to provide that support. Whether you chose to ring us or message us, our approach will always be the same.

1. A volunteer will answer

If you phone or message us a volunteer will answer “Hello, Niteline, how are you this evening?”

2. You talk, we listen

When you feel ready to talk, we will be there to listen.  If you feel you are not ready to talk, we will wait on the line with you. You can talk through any concerns, worries or troubles you may have. There is no problem too big or too small. We may ask questions about your thoughts or feelings to explore what you are feeling.

3. We will not tell you what to do

We will not make decisions for you. We will not give you advice. We believe you are the expert when it comes to your own life. Sometimes people need to cry or shout or say their thoughts out loud to make sense of them and that’s fine. We hope to provide a space for you to do this. You’ll be able to see things more clearly. You’ll be able to think much more clearly about what your options are.  We are there for you as long as you need us.

If you need specific advice, we may be able to give you contact details for organisations that specialise with a problem you may have whether it be information about your college or outside organisations.  We will not make decisions for you and we will support the decisions you make. We believe you are the best person to make decisions for you.

4. Hanging up

You can end the conversation when you’re ready to. There’s no limit on how many times you can get in touch. We will always be there to listen.
