How They Came to be: Miuccia Prada

The Italian designer, activist and Milan born businesswoman Miuccia Prada, has established a legacy of huge prestige in the form of Prada, the luxury fashion house.

Founded in early 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino, Mario’s grandchild Miuccia Prada along with her mother Luisa Prada brought this company to the success we know now.

According to, prior to her business ventures, Miuccia was a former member of the Italian Communist Party, attended the University of Milan and had earned a PhD in political science during this time. Interestingly Miuccia also trained as a mime for five years.

Then in 1978, Miuccia aimed to revamp the traditional and tiresome products produced in the company at the time, gaining her bouts of popularity and interest in the fashion world with her ideas and insights.

Although not having any prior formal fashion experience, Prada released a line of ‘ready-to-wear’ women’s clothes which was greeted with enthusiasm and awe.

After taking over the business from her mother in 1978, Miuccia also made her first series of black nylon handbags and backpacks in 1985.

Working with her husband Bertelli, following huge success previously, launched a more affordable label called ‘Mui Mui’ which according to interviews with Prada were inspired by her own personal wardrobe and titled after her own nickname.

Prada brought versatility and innovation to fashion through looks and styles orchestrated by the businesswoman. Miuccia Prada as of 2019 has a net worth of 2.7 billion USD.
