Free rapid HIV testing is being made available by NUI Galway’s Students’ Union, as part of their SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance) Week.
The initiative, which is run by AIDS West, will take place on the 7th of November from 2 pm until 5 pm in The Space.
According to the Students Union, there has been a 35% increase in HIV diagnoses in Ireland since 2011. The World Health Organisation has estimated that 30% of people with HIV are unaware that they have it.
“We hope that our SHAG week events will encourage our students to take a responsible attitude to sexual health and to be comfortable talking about it”, says Megan Reilly, the NUIGSU President.
Other events will also be taking place across the week, from disclosure training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre to Sex Toy Bingo. Along with this, the STI Clinic will have extended opening hours all week long.
