Starting this September, 40 schools around the country will provide computer science as a Leaving Cert subject to fifth-year students.
The first exam will take place during the 2020 Leaving Cert with 70% of the marks coming from the exam and 30% from a project done in school.
Schools were invited to put their name forward for the new subject and the 40 chosen schools were announced this morning by the Minister for Education Richard Bruton.
The course will focus on programming and computational thinking and how it can be applied to problems and how computing impacts the world. It will also focus on the historical, ethical, environmental, technological and its impacts on the development of society.
“The introduction of this new subject will teach our young people flexible, solution-oriented thinking. It will teach them to be creative, adaptable learners” said Minister Bruton to the Independent.
