Although it's not behaviour that she would condone, Laura Larkin wonders why nobody is pointing fingers at the men featured in that famous Magaluf video...

When a video of a young woman performing a string of oral sex acts on up to 24 men went viral Irish and British media rushed to claim her as their own.

Here the girl, supposedly from Armagh, is Irish. Across the Irish sea she is referred to as British.

The clamour to claim her has nothing to do with geo-political boundaries but is rather a move to bring scandal closer to home. To warn parents that their child could be next and to show Irish and British women equally that nothing they do is safe from public scrutiny.

GUY GOES DOWN ON 24 GIRLS FOR A FREE DRINK just doesn’t have the same panicked ring to it does it?

The front page would not be given over for shaky footage of a young man performing oral sex on one willing woman after another.

If it were it’s hard to imagine twitter branding him “actual vermin”.

Ink doesn’t get spilled for ‘lads just being lads’ because from the media’s point of view, to have a penis implies that you have absolute discretion as to what and who you do with it, as many times as you please.

Twenty four concurrent blow jobs in exchange for a badly made cocktail is absolutely not something I would advocate. Mostly because I like my cocktails to be made well or not at all and I am terrified of STIs.

What the young woman was filmed doing was not savoury by any means. It was unhygienic to say the least, particularly from the point of view of STIs and also from the perspective that it would be hard to judge when a stranger in a holiday bar in Magaluf last had a shower.

The ‘notorious Spanish party capital’ is probably not the epicentre of personal hygiene in the midst of 24 hour drinking binges.

But the outrage that the video has caused needs to be addressed because it’s a virtual rerun of the rampant slut-shaming that broke out after the so-called Slane girl video last year.

The teenager at the epicentre of that storm had to be sedated to deal with the level of vitriol and public abuse hurled at her from those on social media up and down the country.

Fair comment may be an abstract concept but it’s safe to say that if the end result is the medical sedation of a minor you have left the realm of fair comment far behind you.

Yet we seem to have learned nothing. I haven’t seen the video from Magaluf, I have no idea how sober the girl in question was or whether she was capable of making the choices she made.

What was recorded is not where the real problem lies. It is in the aftermath.

The fact is that the focus is, once again, solely and harshly focused on the woman in the video.

This is not a masturbation tape, it took two to tango the entire way through those acts but where is the criticism for the first guy to drop his pants and receive oral sex in a holiday bar?

Or the tenth?

Or the final man?

There were (reportedly) 25 people engaging in sex acts in that video but only one is being vilified in a media culture that loves to find a woman who they can hold up, point at and shout “this is why they shouldn’t be allowed to have control over their sexuality, look how out of control they are”.

Because a woman out of control is a dangerous thing. She threatens to break carefully crafted moulds and a system that is designed to retain the balance of power as it stands.

And she must be put back in her place.

That’s what encourages tabloids to splash sleazy headlines about one girl’s ill-advised holiday antics that were caught on film because every asshole has an iPhone now.

It is not simply an exercise in slut shaming one errant woman it’s a warning to all of us: Toe the line when it comes to sexuality or face public destruction.
