Christmas time can be quiet for music lovers in Cork, but fear not. Lisa O’Donnell tells us the best concerts to be at over the next few weeks.
We’ve had a jam-packed summer, with countless Live at the Marquee dates, and have just seen a stellar line up of acts perform throughout the city as part of the Jazz festival.
Following this indulgence in musical talent, the lead up to the Christmas period can be quiet for music-lovers in Cork. However, there are some gigs that are sure to keep you entertained over the next month.
The musical highlight of the upcoming few weeks will undoubtedly be the arrival of Irish singer song writer Gavin James to Lee-side, as he performs his first major headline gigs in the city on the 16th and 17th. Given the fact that he has become known as the next Ed Sheeran, it’s no surprise that the Dublin native has sold out both dates in Cyprus Avenue.
Another act taking to Cyprus Avenue is Keywest, who are due to perform on December 4th. After their latest album, Joyland, reached number one in the Irish charts, the Dublin band have come a long way from their busking days on Grafton Street, and their Cork date is part of their current tour of the UK and Ireland.
Following their highly appraised performance to a sold out crowd in Cyprus Avenue last year, Delorentos will have a lot to live up to when they make their return to the city on December 13th to play the Everyman Palace.
Blarney man Mick Flannery is no stranger to playing in his home city, and if you’re searching for a spot to spend New Year’s Eve, the home-grown talent will be ringing in 2016 in the Opera House.
However, one of the true hidden gems on the music scene in Cork has to be The Lee Sessions. The sessions are a series of traditional Irish music sessions, which take place almost every night in various pubs across the city centre, such as Sin E and An Spailpin Fanach.
For those of you who are looking for something a bit different to a music gig, there’s plenty of stand-up comedy shows coming up over the next month that are guaranteed to provide a few laughs, with some of the most well-known names in Irish comedy set to grace both the city and county in December.
The City Limits Comedy Club will host David McSavage on the 4th and 5th of the month and Jason Byrne on the 11th and 12th, while the Today FM Live Lounge with Neil Delamere will be visiting De Barra’s in Clonakilty on December 4th.
