In this fast-paced thriller, Matt Damon stars alongside Emily Blunt as ambitious politician David Norris in one of his best and most charismatic performances to date.

A movie of blended genres, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ is an exhilarating balancing act that works. All at once, it samples a taste of politics, science fiction, a paranoid thriller and a blast of romance.

This mind stimulating film pulls the old saying ‘Everything happens for a reason’ back out of the bag for further analysis. Director George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum) re-worked Philip K. Dick’s short story Adjustment Team, giving Damon one main focus – the quest of Fate, to be united with his true love, Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt). To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under, and through the streets of modern-day New York.

The instantly likeable character of David Norris is on the brink of winning his seat in the U.S Senate.

But when a personal story breaks out into the public, his chances of success are squashed and he loses the election. While rehearsing his comeback speech in the men’s bathroom of a hotel, he meets free-spirited contemporary dancer Elise, who is just as committed to succeeding in her career as he is.

Damon and Blunt’s blistering chemistry is overwhelming. Her care-free attitude to life inspires Norris and he goes out to present an electrifying speech which instantly places him back in the running for the next election.

What Norris understood as chance, was carefully manipulated by ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ – a mysteriously ominous group of men in suits and bowler hats – of whom are led by Richardson (John Slattery). It is their responsibility “to make sure everything goes to plan.”

Norris and Sellas are quite obviously made for each other, but the ‘plan’ says they were never meant to meet. Now it is the job of ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, with all their power and influence, to make sure that David and the smitten Elise never cross paths again.

The story becomes a slightly monotonous cat-and-mouse chase for love but still, you will not want to leave your seat to miss it. David’s determination comes to face with overwhelming odds and must make a decision.

Will he let her go and accept the pre-destined path of ‘The Adjustment Bureau’…or risk everything to defy Fate and be with his true love?

Four out of five stars.

The Adjustment Bureau will be released on DVD 21 June.
