Megan Kavanagh tells you how, and where, to save the most.
Let’s face it - being a student is expensive. With rent, transport and nights out it's hard to make our money stretch. So thankfully there are several places that make it that little bit easier for us by offering a student discount. With all our hard work it’s never a bad thing to treat ourselves to something nice now and again. Below I have included a list of the student discounts that are worth using before you graduate to save a pretty penny.

1. Shopping.

There are so many high street shops and online stores that are doing discounts for students at the moment and I for one could not be happier that I can feed my shopping addiction without breaking the bank. If you’re looking to get some pieces for your autumn/winter wardrobe and don’t want to have to spend too much money, then why not avail of one of the perks of being a student and use a discount!

Topshop offer a 10% discount for students throughout the year as well as Topman offering ten percent also.

Boots offer a student discount of 10% (excluding medicines) which is ideal when you’ve ran out of your favourite foundation or you’re in need of the essentials.

New Look offer a 10% student discount, this a great one if you’re looking to get a good pair of winter boots.

If you’re thinking of changing up your hair style for the back to college season, then look no further than Peter Mark who are offering 30% off.

If you’re thinking of treating yourself after uploading that assignment that you have worked tirelessly on for days, then take a trip to Schuch, where they are offering ten percent off to students for all your shoe needs online and instore.

3 of my ultimate favourites Prettylittlething.com, Misguided.com and Boohoo.com are all offering a staggering 20 percent off, so why not treat yourself to a new outfit for the next night out or something nice for a College ball?

And if you feel a little guilty about splurging, buy something slightly more "academic" in Apple or Easons, with their student discount.

2. Transport

Whether we are living in college accommodation or commuting from home, we are all in need of transport in some way and it can be pretty pricey. So it’s within our interest in knowing what modes of transport we can get that won’t burn too big of a hole in our wallets.

Iarnrod Eireann, Citylink, Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and Luas are some of the many forms of transport you can get a discount on as a student here in Ireland which is always good to avail of when you want to get home for the weekend or whether you’re commuting in and out of college every day.

One thing a lot of students will already have is a Student Leap Card but it really does make such a difference. The fact that you can get capped at €20 on a leap Card a week, with Dublin Bus means once you’ve exceeded €20 worth of journeys, all of your other Dublin Bus journeys for that week are essentially free. Bus Eireann, Luas and Iarnrod Eireann also accept Leap Cards.

If you haven’t already gotten yourself a Leap Card I’d highly recommend heading down to your college student union and getting yourself one. They’re only €10.00 and not only can you avail of transport discounts with a Leap Card, you can also avail of many discounts with shopping and food.

3. Food

Speaking of food if you’re looking to eat out but don’t want to break the bank, there are many places you can go and not have to spend too much.

If you haven’t heard already at McDonalds you can get one of their euro saver meals for €5 which includes a medium chips and drink, when you present a Student Leap Card. Gourmet Burger Kitchen also offer a discounted meal at €6.50 for a burger and chips and for 1.50 extra you can get a drink with free refills.

If you’re looking for drinks then why not pop into Pygmalion for 2 for 1 cocktails or into Diceys on a Monday for €2.50 pints and bottles.

If you’re unsure whether or not somewhere offers a student discount why not ask? You’ll thank yourself later when you’ve saved some of that hard earned money.
