Avoid wasting food with these tips.

Is there anything more disappointing than opening the last pack of crisps to discover that they have gone stale? Well, of course there is – I can think of thousands of much worse scenarios. But still, you get the point.

Even if you have tried your utmost to store your food correctly, it happens to us all at some stage: we’ve all bitten into chewy popcorn, hard bread and not-so-crunchy cereal at some point.

No worries: these handy tips will help you keep your food in (near) mint condition (as Comic Book Guy might say).

First up, the oven

If you put foods like cereal, crisps, popcorn and crackers in the oven at 170 degrees Celsius you can bring them back to life.

Just place the snacks onto a baking sheet and bake them for three to five minutes.

You can also use your oven to bring hardened baguettes back to their softened state: simply bake it for 12 minutes at the same temperature. It’s advised that you check the bread every so often while it’s in the oven.

Now it's the microwave's time to shine

If time is against you, stale foods can be revived more quickly in the microwave. If you’re having bread issues, wrap a slice in wet kitchen paper and microwave it for 15 seconds. This will help soften it, but prevent it from getting soggy.

Crisps can be revived in the microwave as well as the oven. Place them on a glass plate and microwave them for one minute. If you want to refresh biscuits, do the same thing but for two minutes.

Make the sacrifice

You can sacrifice other foods to save the stale ones (that sounds so desperate doesn’t it?). For example, if you leave stale biscuits in a sealed jar with a fresh slice of bread, you can perform “cookie osmosis”. The moisture from the bread will transfer to the stale biscuits (that’s the idea anyway).

Then to save the bread (that sounds REALLY desperate), you put a stalk of celery in the bread bag and leave it overnight. The moisture should help bring the bread back to life.

Repurpose

If all you experimenting fails, you can repurpose stale foods (like when you strip the turkey at Christmas and use the remains for enough turkey sandwiches to last until March).
