With must-have beauty brands and products often selling out in seconds, the temptation to turn to cheaper alternatives online can be strong. Bronwyn O'Neill shows us why you should never take the risk.
Every makeup addict knows that beauty products are expensive, but the undeniable need to collect as many Naked palettes as possible. So what do you do if you can’t afford the latest beauty must have? If you type “Naked Palette” into eBay, hundreds of palettes are available for less than €15.

Now unless these are very lovely retailers, these palettes are more than likely fake. But what’s the big deal with buying fake makeup?

Unlike other fake designer products, buying fake makeup can be extremely dangerous as you are putting the product directly on your skin. Unlike the products manufactured by the big beauty brands, these fake products are not made in a regulated factory. Therefore they do not need to have safe ingredients in the products.

So what are you really putting on your skin? Who knows! The fact that they copy the packaging from the real makeup means that they do not put the ingredient list of what is in the product you have purchased. Mercury, lead, arsenic, cyanide and even human urine and rat droppings are often found in counterfeit cosmetics made in China. The level of toxins in some of these products has led to severe allergic reactions including skin rashes and burns, disfigurement and long-term health problems such as high blood pressure and infertility.

Kylie Jenner, the youngest in the Kardashian-Jenner brood, is the owner of a hugely successful cosmetics company. Her lip kits and eye shadow palettes sell out in a matter of seconds when new shades are released. You only have to take a look at eBay to see the huge amount of fake products that you can purchase online for only €1, whereas the real lip kits retail at $29.

The mini mogul has urged her fans not to buy her makeup products anywhere other than her own website. She herself has warned of the dangers of fake beauty products. Some fans who bought the fake lip kits found many horrifying ingredients in their formulas, from glue to gasoline. One girl even got her lips stuck together; a sure sign that these fake products should be thrown out and never purchased again.

“This is getting so out of hand,” said Kylie on Snapchat, warning her followers about the counterfeit makeup. “The ingredients that they’re using are […] really, really dangerous, which is my biggest concern.”

Although high-end makeup products may be extremely expensive, the fake alternative is just too terrifying to even think about. The ingredients found in them are enough to turn me off even browsing eBay for makeup anymore. If you can’t afford these products there are definitely cheaper makeup brands that make amazing beauty buys. This is a much better option than these unregulated fake makeup brands on eBay.
