With the summer fast approaching, Gary Grimes is back with a list of the top things on this May.
It’s hard to believe that summer is only a mere two weeks away. It seems like only yesterday the herds were coming home from their various J1s and most of us were kidding ourselves with the novelty of new stationary and ‘getting back into routine’ that we rely on to get us through the harsh reality of each September.

But alas, it’s true - the academic year is essentially over and it’s finally time for us to get back into the swing of summer living. It’s important to start your summer off with a bang and so, with that in mind, I took it upon myself to compile a list of essential events you need to get yourself to in order to ensure your May 2016 is one to remember.

May 1st – May Day Disco Brunch @ Drury Buildings
Start your summer in style with a disco themed brunch hosted by The Gentleman’s Academy. These guys have been hosting their Disco Brunches in various locations around the city since 2012 to huge success.

The concept is simple – think perfectly poached eggs to the dulcet tones of Diana Ross and Chic. This May Day celebration takes place in the trendy Drury Buildings, centrally located on Drury St.

Always a sold out event, tickets are on sale now, priced at €25 which seems a little steep, but does include a cocktail on arrival, your choice from their brunch menu and 8 hours of disco beats.

May 1st – District 8 Season 4 Closing Party
One of Dublin’s newest and most popular venues, District 8 (formerly the Tivoli Theatre), will once again close its doors for the summer in order to make necessary improvements for their next ‘season’ but not without one last blow out.

London based DJ Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs returns to Dublin for the closing party following a sold out show in Opium Rooms in March of last year.

Tickets are on sale now for a cool €19.94 and it would definitely be worth purchasing ahead of time as this gig is sure to sell out.

May 10th – A$AP Nast @ The Button Factory
Harlem born rapper A$AP Nast, of the same A$AP Mob that A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg hail from, will make his Irish debut this May in the Button Factory as brought to you by dance clubnight Sense.

Tipped by many to be the next break out star from the A$AP Mob, Nast will be performing tracks from his 2012 mixtape ‘Lords Never Worry’ as well as new material and tickets are only €12.50

And to make it even a sweeter deal, ticket holders get free into the official after party ran by Welcome, also in the Button Factory.

May 26th – Fulton & Gold @ Yamamori Tengu
One of Dublin’s freshest R’n’B club nights Fulton & Gold are throwing their second party at the end of the month after a very successful debut last month in The Chelsea Drugstore.

This time round they’re moving things into one of Dublin’s most up and coming late night hotspots Bar Tengu, located at the back of Yamamori on the Quays.

With two floors for dancing and a cosy indoor smoking area, Tengu seems like the perfect home for the Fulton & Gold boys to set up shop.

Expect the music to be sultry slow jams and the crowd to be chill. And the best part? It’s only going to set you back €5 or if you can get in the door before 11pm it’s totally free!

May 27th – Bruce Springsteen @ Croke Park
The Boss plays the first of two sold out nights in Dublin’s Croke Park at the end of the month, his first Irish concert date in nearly 4 years since his Wrecking Ball tour came to the RDS in 2012.

If you were lucky enough to nab a ticket to this sold out gig then you can expect to hear the entire track list from Springsteen’s classic 1980 album ‘The River’ live for the first time in years.

Those who didn’t fare so well in the battle to get a ticket to the show, there might be some hope on sites like DoneDeal if you’re willing to fork out major cash for one.

May 27th – May 29th – Life Festival in Belvedere House Park & Gardens
A sure fire way to ensure your summer is fun filled is by hitting up as many festivals as you can and what better way to kick things off than with Life Fest?  Life is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer and so they’ve procured a stellar line up of the hottest international and native dance and house DJs.

Amongst the impressive line up are the likes of Cyril Hahn, Ejeca, Bicep, Mano Le Tough and Hot Since ’82. With a line up like that it’s sure to be an intense weekend of dancing and frolicking in the sun.

But be careful as tickets are close to selling out, now in their fourth tier, priced at €149 plus booking fee!
