Olivia Hanna looks at the past 10 years of the famous family's life.
Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you’re aware that the Kardashians have reached their ten-year anniversary of being on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. There are so many questions that this season will hopefully answer. Will they confirm the latest rumors? What has happened to their relationships with Caitlyn? We shall see! The show’s 14 season run means that the Kardashians have created one of the most successful reality-shows of all time, but how did they appear on our screens in the first place?
You could say that Kim and the rest of the ‘Klan’ simply made lemonade out of lemons, or in their case, a reality-show out of a sex-tape. Kim was acquainted with celebrity life before her climb to fame thanks to her father, esteemed defense lawyer, Rob Kardashian. Clearly she admired the lifestyles of the rich and famous and orchestrated her own climb to the top, starting with organizing celebrity closets (most notably the closet of Paris Hilton), and dating some bigger names, like Ray-J. But Kim’s big break came when an old sex-tape of her and Ray-J was released. The Kardashians denied any involvement with its release, and even sued to prevent it from coming out.
Ultimately the release of the sex-tape gave Kim her big break. With a little help from ‘momager’ Kris Jenner and Ryan Seacrest, Keeping up with the Kardashians premiered, and Kim and the ‘Klan’ were known for more than just a sex-tape. In the past ten years the Kardashians have capitalized on the success of the show by pursuing a variety of different ventures such as endorsements: their Dash boutiques, multiple hair and makeup lines, books, and so much more. The Kardashians have grown so much that now each member of the family has made a name for themselves. Most notably, Kylie whose lip-kits, lip-fillers, and alleged pregnancy make headlines on a near daily basis. For some reason or another, people can’t get enough of the family.
They seem to have a secret formula that keeps the world suckered in. One-part endless drama, one-part hilarity, one-part luxury, and above all, incredibly close and loving relationships with one another. Everyone fantasizes about wealth, and watching KUWTK indulges that fantasy, but being able to relate to them on a personal level is what forms an attachment to the family that keeps their viewers clicking in.
But is it healthy for the masses to have an intense obsession with the lives of one family? Many people are critical of the fact that when information is released about the Kardashians, such as the latest pregnancy rumors, they completely dominate social media, and in some cases distract from real news. For the past month the world was abuzz with the rumors of Kylie’s and Khloe’s alleged pregnancies, but at the same time deadly hurricanes were ravaging the United States. The media attention isn’t the fault of the Kardashians themselves, but the people who care intensely about their lives. Are the Kardashians just capitalizing on society’s obsession with them, or are we collectively losing track of real societal issues?
Either way, the Kardashians continue to succeed, because for them, any publicity is good publicity. Even the detractors have to give some ‘kredit’ to the Kardashians for their success. Success didn’t strike overnight, but required that they work for it over the past ten years. They chose to turn a violating tape into a multimillion empire and have carefully crafted each big business decision during their rise to fame. Only time will tell if they’ll maintain their empire, but it’s certain to say that for now, it’s the Kardashian’s world, and we’re just living in it.
