University College Dublin, August 20 2012 -- UCD Students’ Union in partnership with M&K Meats ltd. are delighted to today launch their Clever Cuisine scheme, offering students weekly packs of four easy-to-cook meals made from nutritious fresh meat and vegetables for just €10.
The idea for the scheme came following a survey of 500 UCD students last year that showed 81% have skipped meals in the last month in order to pay unavoidable academic costs. The survey found that students were forced to move away from home-cooked nutritious meals towards unhealthy “junk food”. After analysing their findings the Students’ Union approached M&K Meats to develop a project with the aim of making tasty, wholesome meals available to students at a fair and low price.
The result is clevercuisine.ie, the first scheme of its kind in Dublin offering an alternative to unhealthy food for cash-strapped students. Students can buy a weekly meal pack online for €10 containing sets of ingredients and recipes for four meals, one for every day of the college week. All the ingredients are fresh, unprocessed and quick and easy to cook. The meal packs are delivered directly to the Students’ Union for collection every Monday evening at 6pm.
Students or their parents can order the pack from home online on www.clevercuisine.ie anytime using a credit, debit or laser card, or order multiple weeks at once. The scheme is also open to non-UCD students; those using a non-UCD student email address can order the same way and buy their week's meals for €12.
Rachel Breslin, UCD Students’ Union President
“After hearing the statistics on the number of students eating unhealthy take-aways and junk food and as a student myself knowing how expensive fresh meat and vegetables can be I felt the Students’ Union had a role here to help students and develop a solution. I thinkclevercuisine.ie meets all the requirements for students, single portions, variety every week, natural ingredients, easy order and collection and the cost is lower than other options. We are delighted to be able to offer our students this scheme and hope it will ease the financial burden for students and their parents”
Mícheál Gallagher, UCD Students’ Union Welfare Officer
“This is a brilliant new initiative for Students coming into UCD and moving away from home. Eating healthily on a budget has always been a challenge for students with limited time and money and we’re confident clevercuisine.ie can help.
