Two years ago, the CAO handbook listed six UCD engineering programmes and took in 250 first-year students across them all.
As well as the general engineering (omnibus) course, it also offered chemical and bioprocess engineering, civil engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and biosystems engineering.
Now, UCD takes in 250 engineering students through a single CAO entry route, engineering (omnibus), the biggest such course in the country -- and they specialise later.
In 2009, the cut-off points for engineering (omnibus) were 445, falling to 425 in 2010 and 2011.
However, having only one line on the CAO form in comparison with other universities meant UCD had to work harder for student first preferences in engineering.
The reduction in points has not compromised entry standards, and the average points achieved within the course is 495.Courtesy of Independent.ie
