An Bord Pleanala approves planning permission for an integrated campus for colleges of the Dublin Institute of Technology.

An Bord Pleanala has approved plans for a €500m development of the massive health and education campus.

The body said that the new facility is planned to be a capacity upgrade to the existing infrastructure at DIT and effectively it will house about 7,000 students by 2017. 

The scheme is proposed on a 29-hectare site, home to St Brendan's psychiatric hospital for about 200 years. The new campus will will be served by the €300m link-up of the two Luas lines in the capital, expected to be in place by 2018. In addition to the health and education facilities the complex will comprise sport, recreation and other public amenities.

According to DIT by 2050, Grangegorman will be recognised by its students, staff and wider stakeholders as one of the “leading urban quarters in Ireland for its sustainability performance.”
