One Direction made history on Friday when they became the first people to record a programme in TV3’s new Sony HD Studio.

The boyband recorded One Direction: Our Story So Far at the new TV3 studio.

Located at the national broadcaster’s Ballymount headquarters, the 500 square metre state-of-the-art facility will be used increase the station’s current output and to “produce and create a raft of new shows.”

Programmes such as Take Me Out and Alan Hughes’ Family Fortunes will move from off-site shootings to in-house recordings, saving TV3 money.

The extra floor-space will also enable Tonight with Vincent Browne to introduce a live studio audience.

The 500 square metre development, which is based on similar designs at Sky and BBC, was completed in July 2012 and is Ireland's largest purpose-built TV studio.

The work completes the upgrading of TV3's facilities following the installation of a HD transmission suite and infrastructure in 2010.
