Negotiations at UCD Over Offering Free PrEP Medication to Students

The University Times has recently reported, that the University College Dublin (UCD), is in talks to offer free Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, in short PrEP. The medication would reduce the risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Its high success rate, when taken once a day, of over 90 per cent was shown by multiple studies. This would be especially vital to people with high risks of contracting the virus, Trinity News identified such groups to be ‘men who have sex with men, trans people who have sex with men, injecting drug users and sex workers.’

Currently, the HSE (Health Service Executive) does not reimburse PrEP, it is not available with a medical card nor under the Drug Payment Scheme. It must be fully paid by patients.

If talks would come out positive, students with a prescription would be able to collect the medica-tion at the local on campus pharmacy, free of charge
