Should Trinity hold a SlutWalk?

Trinity is holding a debate on the 2nd February addressing whether Trinity should hold its first Slut Walk.

The debate is being held by the Irish Feminist Network and Dublin University’s Gender Equality Society. The debate will take place at 7.00pm on 2nd February  at Cassidy’s Hotel in Upper O’Connell Street.

The Slut Walk is a peaceful protest which started in Toronto on April 3rd, 2011 and aims to deliver the message that nobody deserves to be subjected to sexual assault. Participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman’s appearance.  It originally resulted after a Canadian policeman stated that women should avoid “dressing like sluts” in order to reduce the likelihood of being raped. The Slut Walk has become very popular and have already been organized in NUI Galway and UCD.

Speaking at the event on 2nd February, is William O’Brien, Equality Officer at NUIG who supports the movement. IFC Coordinator opponent to the proposed SlutWalk, Emma Regan, will also address the debate.
