Unprecedented Demand for College Places

There is an unprecedented level of demand for places in college next September.

Figures released by the CAO, the organisation responsible for college entry, reported 71,612 applications had been received before the February 1st deadline.

The level of demand is a reflection of both the high levels of unemployment and the increased pressure on school-leavers to acquire a third-level qualification, in order to compete in an increasingly competitive jobs environment.

The record numbers come despite the Government’s decision last year, to raise the registration fee by €250, a rise of 12.5%.

Though the deadline for applications has now expired, candidates are entitled to re-submit or amend their existing application in June, before the July 1st closing date.

The increased demand for college places will result in further rises in the points required for courses. The rise in points will likely be more marked for certain courses, in areas such as science and technology, which appear to offer greater job prospects.

The surge in applications further increases pressure on third-level institutions, already struggling in the wake of staff and funding cuts.

Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, has previously suggested the introduction of a cap on student numbers may be necessary, in an effort to tackle the funding crisis.
