Who To Keep An Eye Out For In 2018

It’s safe to say that 2017 was a year nobody will forget anytime soon. Between crazy politics, natural disasters, abuse allegations – the list could go on – it was certainly memorable. However, no matter what is going on in the world, one thing is constant – and that’s music. Last year saw up and coming artists soar to fame, as well as great comebacks from some of the biggest names in contemporary music.

Now that 2018 is finally here, it’s time for a new year of fantastic records from both emerging artists and certified favourites. So although we can’t necessarily prepare ourselves for what crazy happenings are going to go on around the world, we can certainly get ready for some great music.

Justin Timberlake

A legend in contemporary pop music, Justin Timberlake is releasing new material in 2018. Justin has kept himself busy in the world of show business since the release of his last album, The 20/20 Experience in 2013 and now he’s ready to return to performing new songs. Between being the confirmed act for this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and teasing snippets of his new material on his Instagram account, fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what JT brings to the stage and charts in 2018.

American singer-songwriter Sza enjoyed plenty of success in 2017, owing to the release of her debut album Ctrl back in June. The R’n’B popstar has no plans to slow down in 2018, what with an upcoming tour, a performing slot at American festival Coachella and plans to release a second album. Sza has also been nominated for five awards at this year’s Grammy’s, making her the most nominated female artist in a list of predominantly male nominations. Keep an eye on this star as her profile only looks set to rise.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys’ bassist Nick O’Malley recently told motorcycle magazine For The Ride that if the band didn’t release an album in 2018, “we’ve got problems”. O’Malley also revealed in the interview that the band have been working on new material since September. This news has been well received by fans of the indie band, as they’ve been keeping quiet since their last album AM in 2013. If that album, laden with tracks such as Do I Wanna Know?, R U Mine? and Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? are anything to go by, this year could make for a stellar comeback for the Monkeys.

Galway girl LAOISE is definitely the Irish act to keep an eye on this year. For those who haven’t already heard of the emerging star, her music has been described as “synth, soul, alternative pop”. The singer-songwriter had a successful 2017 thanks to the release of her EP “Halfway” last spring, and was also featured on 2FM’s list of Irish stars to watch out for in 2018.

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean is known for keeping fans on his toes regarding when he’s going to release music next. He once made a vow to release “five albums before 30”, and although he ensured to release his third and fourth albums Endless and Blonde before then, there’s been no sign of number five …as of yet. Fans of Frank, don’t be surprised if he drops an album out of the blue this year, and if he does, he’ll make 2018 sound a lot better.

Jorja Smith

20-year-old British singer Jorja Smith is set to enjoy a successful year after winning this year’s Critics Choice Award at the upcoming 2018 BRIT Awards. The young soulful star has already made a mark on the world of R’n’B, having previously collaborated with international superstar Drake. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Critics Choice Award at the BRITS, and with global icon Adele being the first recipient of it back in 2008, it’s worth keeping an eye – and an ear – out for future star Jorja.
