The Greatest Laugh-Out-Loud Comedies Available on Netflix

January has dragged on for what seems like a century leaving many of us feeling blue, and college has come back around once more, leaving many of us feeling flustered. It is not exactly the warmest time of the year in terms of both the weather and people’s spirits. Many people are too broke to go out, and the miserable weather makes us want to stay indoors. Why not make the most of a bad situation and indulge in a Netflix binge? And what better way is there to banish the blues than by having a laugh? Here is a selection of some of the best comedy films and television shows that are currently streaming on Netflix.

Hot Fuzz

Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this hilarious film follows the lives of two policemen, Angel and Danny, who must investigate murders occurring in the village of Sandford, Gloucestershire. Although this sounds like more of a horror film than a comedy, expect plenty of laughs along the way from these two brilliant comedic actors.

Dirty Grandpa

Hollywood legend Robert de Niro and Zac Efron star in this comedy which can only be described as absolutely filthy. Efron plays Jason, a lawyer who promises to take his grandfather Dick (de Niro) to Florida for spring break after the passing of his wife. Expect offensive language, scenes of a sexual nature, and a whole lot of laughs along the way.

The Longest Yard

Adam Sandler and Chris Rock star in this sports comedy film. When Paul Crewe (Sandler), a professional quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, ends up in prison for drunk-driving, he forms a team from the prison inmates to play football against their guards. This remake of the 1974 film of the same name has been a hit with comedy fans for years, with many citing it as Sandler’s best film.

Scary Movie

This film, starring the ever-brilliant Anna Faris, is stupidly hilarious. Parodying some of the best horror films from down the years such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, you can expect to see snippets of classic horror films but in a new and hilarious light. If one film isn’t enough for you, don’t worry – Netflix is currently streaming the sequels, too!

Bridesmaids

If you’re looking for a light-hearted easy watch that will have you laughing for sure, Bridesmaids is perfect viewing. The film has a stellar cast including Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Matt Lucas – to name but a few. The film centres around Annie (Wiig) experiencing plenty of mishaps after being asked to be her best friend Lillian’s (Rudolph) maid of honour.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Starring Matthew Broderick, this 1986 classic follows a day in the life of high school student Ferris Bueller, and his determination to take a day off school no matter what obstacles are thrown his way. Expect plenty of laughs as Ferris’ principal tries to catch him out as himself and girlfriend Sloane drive a Ferrari and head to the city of Chicago for the day.

The IT Crowd

This hilarious British sitcom revolves around the staff members in the IT department of the offices of the fictional Reynholm Industries. Starring the likes of Chris O’Dowd, Katherine Parkinson and Noel Fielding, this television series has become a cult classic since finishing in 2010, and if you haven’t already, it’s definitely worth taking a look at.

Outnumbered

Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner star in this hilarious BBC comedy which sees them play father and mother who are “outnumbered” by their three children. The series follows their day-to-day lives and how Dennis and Skinner cope with their sarcastic teenage son Jake, their other son Ben who is a consistent liar, and their inquisitive daughter Karen.

Gavin and Stacey

Written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, this show is nothing short of hilarious, and quite frankly, it’s comedy gold. The series follows the long distance relationship of Gavin, who hails from Essex, England and Stacey, living in Barry, Wales. Corden and Jones also co-star in the show as Gavin and Stacey’s reliable companions Smithy and Vanessa, and with Rob Brydon also starring as the character of Uncle Bryn, this show is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Friends

What is easily considered to be the greatest sitcom of all time, the legendary Friends has finally made it’s way on to Netflix. There is no better sitcom to cheer you up, be it from Chandler’s sarcasm, Phoebe’s free spirit, Monica’s need to be perfect, Joey’s flirting or that Ross and Rachel saga. Friends is a timeless classic, meaning no matter how many times you watch it there are plenty of moments from all ten seasons to keep you laughing and entertained.
