Subtitle european film festival heads to kilkenny

The annual Subtitle European Film Festival is returning to Kilkenny for its fifth year today, with premieres being held in five locations across the city. Over 30 European actors and 50 casting directors are expected to attend, meaning this is the chance for aspiring actors to get noticed!

The festival will host 32 European films throughout the week (all with subtitles of course) from 17 different countries. Highlights this year include the Irish premiere of ‘Graduation’ with Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu in Kilkenny to present the film, along with director Aleksander Kott who will present both of his Russian films ‘Test’ and ‘Insight’.

The Czech comedy (and 2016 Oscar-submission) about a racist parrot, ‘Lost in Munich’ will receive its Irish premiere and the French-Turkish hit ‘Mustang’ will also play the festival, along with other Irish premieres from Denmark, Romania, Poland and more all featuring across the week.

One of the most exciting aspects of the festival will be the meetings between casting directors and actors taking place. The festival has set up 600 casual meetings between actors and casting directors in informal settings like coffee shops and restaurants. This year, casting directors include Sharon Bialy (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead), Deborah Aquila (Twilight, The Shawshank Redemption) and many more. These powerhouses of TV and film will meet with actors over the final four days of the festival throughout Kilkenny.

On the final Sunday (27th) of the festival, Subtitle will stage the Angela Awards, where well known Irish actors and directors present awards to their European counterparts. This year it will be hosted by Victoria Smurfit with live music with the Camembert Quartet.

If you love your film, the Subtitle European Film Festival is the place to be this week.
