Tis’ the Season to Make Mocktails

Christmas is coming and my folders getting fat.

Almost there everyone, the assignments are nearly finished. If you’re like me and you have no exams after Christmas then this means FREEDOM, FINALLY! If you do have exams, well, sorry, I guess…

This week Campus has made you a list of the best winter mocktails you’re gonna find. Maybe you’d like to have all the taste of a cocktail without the hangover or maybe you just don’t drink, either way I’ve something to tickle your fancy.

I’ve kept the ingredients to an absolute minimum so these won’t cost much. They’re idiot friendly too, I swear.

It’s been a very chilly wet week in Ireland, there’s no better way to relax than perched by the fire with a mulled WHYine. Yes, I said WHYine.

Mulled WHYine

Mulled WHYine has all the flavours of your standard mulled wine, only whyine would you have a hangover when you’re heading out for a busy day of Christmas shopping tomorrow? Without further adieu, you will need:

  • A half cup of orange juice
  • A half cup of cranberry juice
  • A half cup of apple juice
  • A cup of water
  • Sugar to taste
  • Mulled wine flavour bags (you’ll find these lads in the spices rack. They come in a box and look like tea bags. Schwarz does a great one for super cheap. This means you don’t have to buy all ten spices needed)

Place all your juice and water into a pot and bring it to the boil. Once boiling add your sugar – as little or as much as you like – and flavour bag. Allow it to simmer on a low heat for 20 minutes and voila! If you’re fancy, you can add some sliced orange to garnish.

Something cold, something new

We’re getting fairly fancy with this one now. Despite the cold weather outside, nothing can put me off a cold sweet drink. Here’s what you’ll need for our take on a raspberry blush.

  • Five raspberries
  • Two parts cranberry juice
  • One part sparkling water
  • A slice of lime
  • Crushed or regular ice

First, throw your five raspberries into a glass and mash them up well with a fork. Fill your glass with ice and pour in your cranberry and sparkling water. Just one small squeeze of lime juice and give her a good stir. Easy peasy, limey squeezey.

The very apple-ling

Possibly the quickest and easiest of them all, here is our very apple-ling mulled apple juice. You will need:

  • A litre of cloudy apple juice
  • Water
  • Maple syrup
  • Flavour bags as mentioned above
  • Half a large orange cut into thin slices
  • One slice of lemon

Add your apple juice and maple syrup to the saucepan. I recommend starting with two tablespoons of maple syrup.

Bring to just under the boil and add your flavour bag. Allow to simmer for 20 minutes.
