Top 10 summer wardrobe essentials

It’s June, we had our first weekend of music festivals with Slane, Life and Forbidden Fruit and it has rained for approximately 36 of the last 48 hours; that’s right, it’s time to inject a hint of summer into your wardrobe.
How? The following ten items will serve you well whatever your plans for summer are, be it inter-railing, a holiday with the girls or simply chilling in your hometown.
Cut-off shorts
These are your one-way ticket to looking cool during the summer months (just don’t wear them with your butt-cheeks hanging out, okay?)
They’ll make you feel right at home at a concert, teamed with a cool band t-shirt, patterned wellies and flower crown, saving you the uncomfortable damp jeans experience.
They also look great with a bikini top and basic white tee if you venture abroad.
An over-sized jumper
This is the essential of all essentials. It doesn’t matter where you are this summer, a comfy, baggy jumper is a must-have for a summer’s evening.
It’ll look effortless thrown over anything from a dress, to the aforementioned cut-offs. Everyone will say, “wow, you look so cool,” and you’ll say “this old thing? I just threw it on.”
You will be so cosy and still look on point. A must for those long awaited summer BBQs.
A kimono is definitely a long-standing favourite with any fashionista; everyone from Kate Moss to Vanessa Hudgens have used this staple item to nail that boho-chic look.
Luckily for us, the kimono is not going anywhere. Available in all good Penneys stores near you.
The off-the-shoulder top
Adding an off-the-shoulder top to your wardrobe will give off some serious 70’s vibes; a huge trend this summer.
If you’re not mad into fringing and suede or flowers in your long, tangled hair, then the off-the-shoulder top helps get that hippy, just off the bus from Woodstock look in a much more subtle manner.
You can pick up one as fancy and dressy as you like (I nabbed a silky one from River Island not so long ago) but you can also reach for the more casual ones too, which are in stock anywhere from H&M to Miss Selfridge.
High-waisted jeans
These are a must-have for any Irish girl. They come in various colours and shades of denim, but a white pair can look super summery yet still keep your pins warm on the days the Irish weather lets you down, which lets face it, is a lot more than we care to admit.
As I have said already, the 70’s are huge this summer and if you are feeling brave, you could even experiment with a high-waisted pair of flares.
Hey, if they’re good enough for Laura Whitmore, they’re good enough for us. Team them with a wide brimmed sunhat and a crop top and you’re good to go.
Yes, dungarees. The things your mother forced you to wear when you were three are everywhere you look this summer.
Taylor Swift teamed hers with a crop top and hasn’t Alexa Chung been rocking them for forever anyway?
They really are an easy way to be bang on trend this season, but admittedly, they aren’t to everyone’s taste, although there is no harm in trying a pair on and seeing what you think.
Crop top
There is no denying it, a crop top just goes with anything. They’re kind of like the cornerstone of any outfit.
It’s 100% a bona-fide essential for any summer wardrobe, looking great on a night out, but also during the day too. It’s a no-brainer.
Palazzo pants
These gypsy-style, patterned pants practically scream summer! They are really handy when you can’t be bothered tanning your legs for a night out, but also really work for a daytime look too.
Wear them with wedges at night or your trusted gladiator sandals during the day for that summer goddess feel.
A summer hat
I’ve already suggested a wide-brimmed summer hat to go with those flared high-waisted jeans you’re going to rock, but I really can’t emphasise enough, the importance of owning a sun hat during summer.
Not only will it keep your scalp free from those harmful UV rays, but they can hide a multitude of bad hair days. It’s a win-win.
A rain jacket
The list wouldn’t be complete for an Irish summer if a rain jacket wasn’t given a mention. Let’s face it, it will probably rain sometime during a concert you’re at, but chances are, you really don’t want to spoil your carefully assembled outfit.
However, never fear. You don’t have to ruin your outfit with a rain jacket, because investing in a clear one from Topshop is the answer to your woes.
And if you’re not all that bothered about anyone seeing your cool new crop top, Penneys always have a good stock of bright and colourful rain macs that will keep you dry while you’re busy having the time of your life.
