Recession-Proof Your CV

In this competitive job market, how can you make your CV stand out? Follow our top 7 tips for writing a recession-proof CV.

Recession CV

1. BE DIFFERENT

HR managers and recruiters see hundreds of CVS hit their inbox every day. The ones that get read are the ones that stand out.

Use:

  • Eye catching subject lines
  • Write concise cover letters that emphasise your uniqueness
  • Make sure your CV can be scanned quickly with your key achievements highlighted.

2. AVOID EXAGGERATING YOUR STRENGTHS

In times when companies are not in a mood to overpay employees, do not present yourself as an expensive choice.

Highlight your skills and achievements but appear flexible on salary terms. When the employer raises the issue, discuss your salary in ranges, not exact figures.

3. HIGHLIGHT YOUR COST SAVING CAPABILITIES

Include all your cost saving efforts in your previous jobs and spell them out.

Also, highlight your revenue generating contributions. Using brief examples is always more effective -

You may say, reduced costs by 70% or implemented an x program that increased sales by 25%.

4. EDUCATE YOURSELF

Take stock of your current job position and industry. What complementary skills can you learn to broaden what you offer in the workplace?

Try some certifications/courses that can add value to your CV. Start by checking out the Training & Development Section on LoadzaJobs.ie.

Such programs can pave your way to increased knowledge and skills which can definitely translate into increased job security and flexibility.

5. SELL YOUR SUCCESS

CV writing is all about sales, marketing and merchandising. You're the product and the CV is the sales piece that you'll use to merchandise your achievements.

Remember, past behaviour is indicative of future performance; be certain to showcase your achievements so that prospective employers can read about all of the wonderful things that you'll be doing for them!

Showcasing your skills, qualifications, training and achievements that are related to your current career objectives. Emphasise these skills by moving them to the forefront of your CV.

6. BE A SPECIALIST, NOT A GENERALIST

Although you might think a more generalised CV would attract lots of different types of opportunities, the exact opposite is true.

Companies want to hire individuals with a specific area of expertise. Don't make a prospective employer have to "dig down" into your CV to find relevant experience. They won't!

7. BRAND YOURSELF FOR COMPETITIVE DISTINCTION

What can you do to distinguish yourself from the crowd of candidates, all with the same skills and qualifications, all vying for the same position?

The answer: A branding statement, prominently positioned near the top of your CV, that highlights your unique value proposition; the one thing that you do better than anything else.
