It’s Time To Acknowledge That Manchester United Are Serious Title Contenders

“Romeo Lukaku scores a brace to help Manchester United to a comfortable 4-1 win.”

After an away victory against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League, this headline found its way to the newspapers once again. I have lost count of the number of times United have scored four times in a match already. They are now scoring goals for fun, and I am most certain that I wouldn’t be saying that one year ago.

After years of instability post-Fergie era, it looks as though Manchester United have finally found the magic formula that will lead them to the top. The Red Devils are red-hot favourites for the Premier League title along with their noisy neighbours, Manchester City. Currently, United are locked on points at the top of the table with City, having won 5 and drawn 1 game in 6 matches so far in the Premier League this season.

But, one may ask, what is the secret towards United’s flourishing start to their season so far?

One of the most talked about reasons is Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker has already reached double digits for goals this season in his first 9 appearances for the club. Tall, strong and calm, the striker can outmuscle most defenders in the Premier League with his sheer physicality.

Manchester United have certainly made a shrewd acquisition in Romelu Lukaku. The outstanding Belgian striker already has a proven track record in the Premier League due to his spells at both, West Bromwich Albion and Everton. The striker is simply tailor-made for the physical battle of the English league.

Another brilliant purchase of the summer transfer market was Chelsea’s outcast, Nemanja Matic. The Serbian was a key player under Mourinho when the Portuguese manager was in charge at Chelsea. It only made sense that the ‘Special One’ grabbed this opportunity to take back one of his most admired assets from his former club.

In Matic, United have a disciplined defensive midfielder who shields the back four intelligently. He knows when to intercept balls, make tackles and pass the ball. Matic is the rock of the backline. His contribution to the team allows the other players to flourish without shackles anymore and one of those players, is Paul Pogba, one of Europe’s most talented midfielders.

Pogba now has more freedom to roam in attacking areas of the pitch as Matic has covered up the defensive side of the beautiful game. Pogba is physically strong, has outstanding technical ability, and has a great eye for a pass. However, unfortunately for the Red Devils, the Frenchman is expected to be side-lined until at least November due to a hamstring injury he succumbed a few weeks back.

Although this may be interpreted as a negative to United fans, it’s also another reason to believe the pundits who believe United will come out on top this season- the club’s

immense squad depth. In recent games, even with the absence of midfield maestro Pogba, United have numerous competent players who are up to the task of providing cover. Pogba’s injury means players like Mata and Herrera can get more game time and contribute to the team, and this certainly isn’t a negative.

As well as that, Manchester United wonder-boy Marcus Rashford and France prodigy Anthony Martial are consistently battling out each other for a spot in the starting line up. This proves to be healthy competition for that left-wing role of the pitch, with both players continuing to find their name on the scoresheet too.

Second season syndrome is something you can bet on with Jose Mourinho. Stats show that Jose Mourinho has won the domestic league in his second season at all his previous clubs which are Chelsea, Inter Milan, Porto, Real Madrid. Can the ‘Special One’ guide United to the Premier League title this time around? Only time will tell, but signs indicate that United are a huge threat to other teams domestically and in Europe this year.

What do you think of Manchester United this season? Do you think they are the real deal?
